Cycle Saturday: Filming with Newsnight and a final hurrah...

(UPDATE: The feature is up on the BBC News Magazine site, which can be viewed anywhere in the world! Click here for article and video)

I was back out on my Pashley Princess yesterday for a ride to Broadway Market (fast becoming a favourite place to ride to) for one of my Cycle Saturdays with The Boy. This one was a bit different though, as I spent the morning filming a piece for Newsnight with BBC Hague correspondent Anna Holligan...
Keen cyclist Anna, along with producer Hannah & camera man / editor Suraj set off from The Netherlands on 31st July for a grand bike tour to London. I was thrilled to be asked to be a part of her journey, taking about what it's like cycling in London. Thankfully the August weather held out for a sunny day of riding and recording at Lock 7 Cycle Cafe...
It was an absolute pleasure meeting Anna, Hannah and Suraj, chatting about Anna's experiences of cycling Dutch style vs London... and having a go on her Burgers bicycle: my FIRST time trying out a back-pedal break system! The cycling feature will be shown on Newsnight next Wednesday at 22:30 on BBC2.

Saturday was also the final hurrah for the Clubman. After enjoying it for a very extended loan, it's now dismantled and packed up for its return to Stratford-upon-Avon... but not before The Boy took it out for a final spin around East London with me!

Certainly a new riding experience to what I'm used to, the Major Taylor bars meant a totally alien riding position... a far cry from my sit-up-and-beg relaxed style. On longer rides it was quite hard on my back, especially with my Scoliosis (I also think part of the problem was the frame size being a tad too small for me and Ian found this too) - not the most comfortable position, but I tried it all the same.
The S3X-3 speed fixed gear was a strange concept to get my head around... this seemed to be the case for most people I met and found this out about the bike! I ended up riding the bike in 2nd gear all the time: for some reason, changing the gears was fiddly on the bike, and on occasion it would 'snap' out of a changed gear. However, riding fixed DID spark off a love for both of us, with Ian now wanting to get a fixie of his own!

After finishing the filming, we rode on to the new Look Mum No Hands on Mare Street for a caffeine-shot and some good eating.

Has to be said - the new LMNH is becoming a favourite hangout of mine, with a brilliant menu including hot food and some amazing coffee blends on offer... not to mention Earl Grey tea that looks like THIS:

All riding days should end with a pot of tea like this and a charming cycle back home.

Sunday Social

 1. What are 3 items you can't live without on a daily basis (water, food, shelter, and clothes don't count)
A. My phone
B. Gum (especially after eating a meal or drinking coffee/tea)
C. Perfume (those who know me know that I love wearing my perfumes)
2. What is your all time favorite book? Why?
Oh this one is a toughy... so many to chose from! I would have to say my all time favorite book is  "There is always something there to remind me" by Beth Harbison. I love how I can relate to the emotional roller coaster the main character was going through especially dealing with love. Definitely a romance novel :)

3. What is something you'd like to accomplish before the end of 2013?
At least 50% of my New Years Resolutions list... sigh maybe next year lol
4. If you could go back and relive any year of your life which year would it be?
The summer of 2003... The year I met my first love.

5. What do you wish people knew about you without you having to tell them?
That I'm Persian-American. Most people like to play the guessing game when it comes to my ethnicity.  (Greek, Italian, Indian... you name it lol)

July Favorites

I seriously cannot believe that July is over! Add to that the fact that my summer is almost over... Eek! This will be the first of a new segment on braforme, which will consist of my favorites for a particular month. The following items were my ultimate must-haves for the month of July. What were your monthly favorites?

It seems like I've been wearing this statement necklace with every outfit. It definitely jazzes up any look!

I'm a huge lover of all things pomegranate! Maybe it's because I'm Persian... In any case, the smell of this soap is just pure deliciousness! It leaves your hands smelling good for hours upon hours. Trust me!

This bracelet looks great with all of my watches, whether gold or silver. It makes for perfect arm candy!

This is a must-have solution for home pedicures! "Swept Off My Feet" oil, by Essie, helps with dry feet and softens your cuticles so those toeies look pretty and perfect in sandals.

Who would have know that apple and lavender would smell sooo good as a pair?!?!? You just have to make time to stop by at B&BW to smell this lotion. I got so many compliments from co-workers and my patients after I started using it.

I've literally been wearing this bright beauty like non-stop over the past month! "Impassioned" by MAC is definitely worth picking up.

"La Paz-itively Hot" is a gorgeous pink color that I have been addicted to! It's the perfect pink shade for the summer season :)

How To Make A Pointy Bra Round!

Sorry for the delay in posting this tutorial. I had to get major dental work done this week and was so drained by it that I couldn’t inspire myself to do anything other than watch Olympic volleyball with my dog.

Anyway,  you might remember in my last post I showed a method for making a high-cut bra look lower-cut. I’m going to show the alteration to make a pointy bra give a rounder shape on the same bra I showed in that tutorial, but you don’t need to do both together. You can make a bra more round even if you haven’t done any other alterations on it. And in fact, this alteration is in some ways simpler than the alteration that makes a bra lower-cut. To make a bra more round, you don’t need to cut anything, and you can take out the stitching at any time without significant damage to the bra itself. I still wouldn’t recommend doing this to an expensive brand-new bra, but use your judgment and proceed at your own risk. I also wouldn’t recommend doing this to a bra that is too small or close to too small in the cups. The nature of the alteration takes some of the space out of the cups, so it’s better to do this on a bra that fits well or runs a little big on you. However, you won’t lose a whole cup size—more like 1/4 of a cup size, if that--unless you go really wild with it. This alteration will also probably not work with a bra that has a thin lace or mesh upper section—it will only work with fabric that has enough weight to hold a stitch.

The concept for this alteration is pretty basic. Think of it like this: a bra that gives a pointy shape does so because there is too much depth in the cups compared to their width. A view from above:

So to make that pointy-shaped bra give a round shape, you want to take in some of the fabric at the apex so the cup will have less depth compared to its width. Like so:

From the front, the alteration will look like this:

The red line along the seam will be brought up to the red line above the seam. What you will do is take in some of the fabric along the seam that goes diagonally across the cup. Basically you will pull the bottom sections up over the top section and stitch them in place there. When you’re finished, the bottom sections will look the same but the top section will look a bit smaller. It really doesn’t take much to significantly change the shape a bra gives. On my Pippa, I took in slightly more than half an inch at the deepest point of the alteration.

To start, put on your pointy-shaped bra and grab the seam that we are going to sew along. Pull it up over the top section and see how it looks from the side. Try to get a gauge of how much you are going to want to take it in. When you find the best position, tape it in place at the center of the seam (I used scotch tape) and take the bra off.

Now, place the bra over your knee and tape the whole seam.

It’s not going to be at the same width the whole way around. Instead, you will take in the most fabric at the center of the seam and taper off to nothing as you approach the bottom and top of the seam. Remember that you can’t take any volume out of the underwire, so you have to get all the way back out to the normal seam before it hits the underwire. This will probably make more sense to those who sew regularly. For those who don’t, it is ultimately going to look something like this:

When you’ve taped all across the front of the seam, turn the bra inside and tape the inside too. First make sure that the fold is as flat as possible—you want to be sewing three layers of fabric, one of which is the seam, not a crumpled bundle of several layers. This is why I recommend taping. If you want to pin it, you can try to do that too but I think taping makes it a LOT easier to ensure a continuous rounded shape along the alteration.

If you do use the tape, you are DEFINITELY going to need a thimble or two to get the needle through all the layers of fabric and tape. If you don’t have any thimbles, you can make one out of many layers of tape wrapped around your thumb and pointer finger—that’s what I did. I used the tape-thimbles to get the needle partway through the fabric, and then used old tweezers to pull the needle all the way through. DO NOT use your teeth to pull the needle through—you might chip your tooth and it is not worth that risk. (That’s not why I had to get the dental work this week, but it would be a fitting cautionary tale if it was!)

Now that you’re all ready with your thimbles and tweezers and tape, start sewing. It’s sort of an involved process so take your time. I recommend starting at the bottom of the seam, near the underwire, and working your way towards the upper corner where the strap is. You might find that you need to pause a few times to rearrange the tape along the fold so it stays as neat as possible.

When you’ve sewn the whole seam, you should be able to rip the tape off along the stitches. If it’s a really thick layer of tape, be careful and hold the stitches down so the pull of the tape doesn’t distort them.

The finished result from the front:

And the difference from the side, here is the bra before alteration:

…and after!

Here are the two side by side.

I didn’t find that this alteration significantly changed the cup size of my Pippa, but as a couple of people pointed out in my last post, it was slightly big on me to start with. Like I mentioned earlier in this post, you are going to lose some volume in the cup by doing this alteration, so keep that in mind if the bra you’re working on is already a tight squeeze. However, you should be able to get a good idea of how it will fit from the way you tape it before you start sewing.

Here’s the same alteration (taped but not sewn yet) on a Freya Nieve, before:

…and taped for the alteration:

Friday Favorites!

Hey everyone! I'm back to organizing my blog posts, and I've decided to add a Friday Favorites post to the typical schedule. It's going pretty much consist of things that I'm favoring throughout the week, such as miscellaneous products or styles. Since Friday is my favorite day of the week, (I'm sure I'm not alone with that one), what better time to share with y'all some of my favorite things? TGIF everyone!!!

So my favorite thing on planet earth is COFFEE!!! Sadly, this was my last coffee "drank" until the cold weather comes around. My last cup of coffee was from Dunkin Donuts and let's just say I was disappointed... but I do love their Donuts! (mmm Boston Cream delishhh)

I have been hooked on audible books! Since I'm a busy girl I hardly have the time to read a book like I use to. So I just simply downloaded the audible app on my phone and purchased Mindy's book "Is everyone hanging out without me." This book is two thumbs up for sure! She's so entertaining!!! I listen to it when I'm cleaning my house or driving around town :) (Yes I'm that girl laughing in my car to myself lol)

It's about time I got this book! One of my favorite summer reads :)

This stuff is amazing!!! I saw it at Whole Foods about a year ago. It's the best instant teeth whitener on the go (perfect for all the coffee lovers out there). Definitely a favorite of mine!

The Cycle Show & Lady Vélo...

It's been an exciting couple of weeks for Vélo-City-Girl. After doing a quick photo-shoot and interview last week for the Evening Standard, on Sunday I filmed at Look Mum No Hands for The Cycle Show on ITV4!  I was their guest presenter for episode two, interviewing the Near Naked Man cycling group & chatting on the sofa. I thrilled to be asked to be a part of it - especially as it's a brand new show dedicated to something so close to my heart.

Of course, it wouldn't be VCG if there wasn't a touch of Cycle Chic to my outfit for the day...
Bike Lane Dress: Anthropologie
Cardigan: Monsoon
"LadyVélo" Name Necklace: Tatty Devine

Sandals: Urban Outfitters

Riding over to LMNH early on Sunday morning with The Boy, it would be an understatement to say I was filled with nervous excitement about the day ahead, especially as I'd never done anything like that before and knowing who else was on the show.

The atmosphere was fantastic: the usual buzz of LMNH mixed with the friendly production crew was perfect. Of course, The Boy was on hand to capture what went on behind the scenes with his camera...

The guests for the day were pretty spectacular. First up the greatest cyclist of the 20th century and an utter cycling legend - EDDY MERCKX!

Also on the show was actor and musician Gary Kemp, who taking part in the RollaPaluza Challenge. He's an absolute gentleman & it was rather exciting to meet him too...

Without a doubt, this was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had. The brilliant thing about The Cycle Show is that it doesn't just focus on one single element of cycling: there are so many different facets to it... and The Cycle Show is on a mission to represent us all.

Massive thank you to Ian James for these photos. Further photography by him of the day & of Eddy Merckx can be seen in this Flickr set.
