London Bike Kitchen: WAGFEST 2015...

So, we know that London Bike Kitchen are pretty bad-ass, and on Saturday Jenni Gwiazdowski and the gang further proved it with their first ever LBKWAGFEST!


Earlier this year, Monika Zamojska came up with the idea of holding a WAG (Women and Gender variant) bike festival. The idea of celebrating all things bike blossomed into an amazing event, held at Oakley in Residence. The setting was perfect - sunshine, cycling and positive people and a day filled with inspirational talks, lively discussion and some fly cycling gear on sale to boot…

I was honoured to be a panelist discussing Urban Riding/Commuting and how to get more under-represented groups cycling. Chaired by Monika and talking alongside Chris Garrison of Trek Bikes, and Lois May-Miller of Morvelo & Velocity, it was an insightful and brilliant experience, with some enlightening audience participation - also #EducatingDicks needs to be come a thing!

Further panel discussions on the agenda included Racing and Competitive Cycling. This one was chaired by the ace Juliet Elliot, with Jess Duffy, Celeste Morton and Sophie Edmonson talking about there experiences of competitive racing, and how to get involved / what to expect. Plenty of women came away from that talk with the desire to get into racing…

Bikes and Activism was the last panel of the day, headed up by long time LDN Bike Kitchen member Hannah McQuarrie, with LBK BOSS Jenni and Amy Aeron-Thomas… again, some very inspiring and motivational words on community bike projects, cycling training and widening participation.

A lot of people (myself included) were very excited to see special guest Emily Chappell give a talk on her long distance cycling adventures. Having VERY recently come back from doing Transcontinental 2015, Emily captured the WAGFEST audience talking about the real highs and the lows of such endurance riding… and the highs definitely outweighed them. Gotta say I’m very surprised at some of the thoughts whirling around my head after having a wonderful chat with her… and what I’m thinking of for 2020…

The reaction from everyone who attended the festival has been amazing, and I'm still feeling really hyped about the whole event. Inspirational, motivational and encouraging vibes were the order of the day, and there is already talk of WAGFEST returning at Christmas with even more going on! This feels like the beginning of something massive - so huge thanks to Jenni, Monika and all at London Bike Kitchen for putting on such a brilliant day... roll on the next WAGFEST!

The Red Hook Criterium London 2015...

I was already thinking about going along to it, but when The Cycle Show asked me to report on last Saturday’s Red Hook Crit, I jumped at the chance. This was the London debut of what is regarded as the world’s premier track bike crit, with riders coming from all over the world. With the chance on offer to get very up close and personal with the action, there was no way I was going to miss that chance.

The event was created in 2008 by David Trimble, with the aim of combining the thrill of bare knuckle alleycat races with the organised mountain bike and track races he’d competed in. The first one took place in Brooklyn’s Red Hook district and 7 years later, the crit has become an international phenomenon, having been exported beyond NYC to Milan, Barcelona and now London - the fourth city to host the event.  For the London leg, the stage (or track) was set in Greenwich - right on my doorstep. As I’ve not quite mastered the art of cycling on water, I took the cable car over the Thames and the scenes I was greeted with were spectacular. Greenwich Peninsular had been completely transformed for a very intense day of racing: metal barriers and blocks snaked around the area creating the track, stands, stalls and team tents were dotted throughout, roads had been re-surfaced, the crowds were gathering and riders were EVERYWHERE.

Touching down, my first port of call was parc fermé, which would be our filming base for the day. A happy advantage of having a press pass was having full access to this closed area. Being in the middle of the riders while they did warm up laps and prepped their bikes and gear was pretty cool. I was surrounded by men and women looking incredibly fly in their dazzling race suits, hardcore track and fixed gear bikes with incredible paint jobs, and all those tattoos… oh my god did I have envy for all of the above!

Individual riders, teams and faces I know from the world of cycling were there in abundance - some taking part for the first time ever in a crit, and some who were already seasoned legends on the scene. Catching up with and interviewing a few of them for the show was brilliant and at the same time, I was finding myself getting caught up in their excitement and the pure adrenalin buzz of it all. It’s a serious and focused event - you have to be when you’re riding that hard on such a challenging and tight course - but the atmosphere was incredibly chilled. Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and perhaps focusing on not only the race, but on having a very good time.

Throughout the afternoon the qualification rounds were going on, each lasting for 20 minutes. During these, you were able to get a very intense glimpse of what was to come later in the evening. There was the push and the pursuit to get the fastest times, to be in with a chance of making it through to the next round, and eventually to the main races. Even at this stage there were thrills and indeed spills… a few crashes had occurred in both the men's and women’s qualifiers, resulting in neutralised sessions and some high emotions. Like I said, this is quite the course - the challenge of taking on the demanding tight laps and cycling in a pack of riders with no brakes isn’t exactly easy. Excellent bike handling skills are a must when taking part in an event like this.

After the thrill of the qualifiers, the race I’d been looking forward to the most came up at 19:30 - the Women’s Criterium: 20 laps and 22.5km of pure racing. I was amongst those who had gotten through to the final while they were warming up, and once again could feel the adrenalin pulsing through the air. Having a chat with Juliet Elliot while she was on the rollers, and listening to her explain her journey into doing the crit & her excitement about it all was actually infectious for me. There was a part of me that was wishing I was doing it...  I could only dream of being anything close to these strong, hard and powerful women! For that night, watching it, cheering them on and speaking to the winner at the end would have to be enough for me...

The Men's Criterium was longer at 26 laps and 30km, and was also a thrill to watch. It was another full on session of speed, agility and skill to take in and enjoy...

I can only imagine how each and every ride must have felt at the end of the Red Hook, but I was certainly exhausted at the finish! This was through a combination of the sheer levels of excitement I'd spent on the day - seeing it all for filming, catching up with friends and making new ones along the way. 

The Red Hook Crit was one of the most fast paced and atmospheric cycling events I'd ever been to: it was a real celebration of that style of racing and such an organic form of riding too: track specific fixed gear bikes with no breaks - YOU and the machine are as one. All that focus, all that control... and all that fun. I'm thrilled to have seen it, and to come away from it wanting to ride fixed gear once again (and figuring out if I could get to Barcelona for the next round!) is quite something indeed...

Back to Bakewell - Eroica Britannia 2015...

After 12 months of anticipation (I kid you not - I've been looking forward to it since last year's adventure), the big weekend finally came round for Eroica Britannia 2015! Returning again as a guest of Lush Cosmetics, this year I had The Boy join me for a 3 day jolly in the beautiful Peak District... and to take on 30 miles of the rolling countryside with me!

Arriving on the Friday afternoon with our luggage and his 1982 E.G Bates in tow, we settled into our home for the next few days at Darwin Forest Country Park - a gorgeous pine lodge with all the creature comforts of home, and a rather luxurious his & hers welcome pack from Team Lush - a pretty amazing array of products to keep us fresh, fragrant and relaxed during our stay...

As tempting as it was to stay-in and chill on Friday night, I wanted to get down to the serious and exciting business of choosing my bike for the event. By happy coincidence, my bike hire had been arranged with Classicobici, who I met and made friends with on the last Tweed Run. Seeing them again and their stunning collection of pre-1987 bikes was fantastic. Once I was measured, I checked out the rack and was immediately drawn to a circa 1970's Elvish. Yep - I'd never come across this brand of bike either, so it was nice to go for something quite unique for the weekend...

With my steed sorted, a quick recce of Eroica Britannia was in order. While it was still relatively quiet, this was a good chance to make a mental note of what to check out on Saturday for the entire day. It was also the perfect opportunity to get a cheeky Lush spa treatment in and beat the crowds!

On Saturday, Eroica Britannia was in full swing: the show ground was packed full of spectators, vendors and beautiful bicycles as far as the eye could see... this was 30 acres of fun! I indulged in the festivities and dressed up in the first of the two vintage style outfits I had planned for the weekend. With a mix of Bob By Dop, Peponita and Forever 21, it was a fun and colourful look for the day...

The festival was a LOT bigger this time round, with so much more going on! It was great to be able to spend the entire day at the site soaking it all in and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere...

After an epic Fish & Chip supper in Bakewell and an earliy(ish) night, we were ready to take on 30 miles of the Peak District on Sunday morning. The Boy was incredibly excited about it: this was after all his old stomping ground when he was a kid, and after hearing how much fun I'd had last year, he was 100% up for the adventure. I was more than pleased to have him riding by my side this time round - considering I managed to get lost on my own at one point on the course last year, company that I knew was ideal! The buzz in Bakewell as the 30 milers set off was of course electric - all the emotions you could imagine were in the air, but the one that soared above them all - pure JOY! An added moment of excitement for me came about when I finally met (in real life) and got to ride with Warp Films Mark Herbert, and his lovely Gios Torino bike...

Setting off on our ride and through the glorious Peak District, once again my breath was taken away by the surroundings. Perhaps it was because I had The Boy with me, but it felt like I took so much more of it in this time round. We didn't race to the end - we took our time, enjoyed the scenery and really appreciated what the route had on offer. Of course there were points where some of the climbs were still a *bit* too much for me, and I have no shame in saying the moments of hopping off the bike and pushing were not defeat... those moments probably allowed me to finish the course again!

We got to the end of the trails and with the final stamps, we did it - we crossed the finish line together and we did it! Happily exhausted, we washed down our success with a couple of cocktails, before changing back into our everyday civvies and heading back to the big smoke...

Once again it was a brilliant weekend back in Bakewell for the return of Eroica Britannia, and I still have a smile on my face thinking about it now. The fact that it's a fun, relaxed and enjoyable cycling sportive is such a huge appeal, which clearly drew so many people to it this year. I'm already thinking about 2020, plans for having my own bike to take to it and perhaps bumping up to do the 55 miler... you never know what the future might bring in regards to what we'll do next for Eroica, so watch this space!
